Number of bovine animals, 1 May 2023 (provisional)

   The number of dairy cows this spring was a couple of percent lower than last year. The number of suckler cows also decreased.

• In May 2023, there were around 820,800 cattle, two percent fewer than in the previous year.
• The number of dairy cows decreased by 2% to 242,000 head.  The number of dairy cows decreased in almost all regions. On average, farms had 52 dairy cows.
• The number of suckler cows fell slightly to around 64,600 head. The highest numbers of suckler cows are found in North Ostrobothnia, Pirkanmaa and South Ostrobothnia.
