Proportion of primary producers from value added in the food chain

The food chain refers to all the actors in the food chain, from primary producers to the consumer's plate, from field to table. Primary production in the food chain refers to the first stage of the chain. Primary production includes dairy production, egg production, beef cattle rearing, fishing and fish farming, growing vegetables and fruit, cereals and mushrooms, honey production, wild berry and mushroom gathering and hunting. Primary production includes activities related to primary production, such as the production and rearing of products, cultivation and harvesting, milking, the stages of animal production before slaughter and the transport of live animals. In most cases, the value of a food increases the further along the food chain it is, i.e. the extent to which the food is so-called processed.

The objective of Finland's CAP plan for the period 2023-2027 is that the value added by primary producers to their products will increase through increased cooperation. Currently, the share of primary producers in the value added of the food chain has remained fairly stable or in a slight downward trend at around 25%, in line with the EU average. However, the share of primary producers in the value added of the food supply chain varies widely between EU Member States, from 7% up to 56%.

Description of the indicator

The indicator quantifies the value added generated by the different actors in the food chain and calculates the share of primary production in total value added.

The indicator is a common CAP plan impact indicator I.8 as set out in regulation (EU) 2021/2115 (eur-lex.europa.eu) (eur-lex.europa.eu), Annex I. It is used in all Member States.

The first data of the indicator will be added to the page in 2025.
