Horticultural Statistics 2012 (provisional)

  • In 2012, there were 4,034 horticultural enterprises. There was a decrease of 270 enterprises (–6%) compared to the previous year.
  • The outdoor production area was 15,729 hectares (–4%) and the greenhouse area was 401 hectares (–6%).
  • In terms of area, the most important outdoor vegetables were peas (2,860 hectares), carrots (1,480 hectares) and onions (1,110 hectares).
  • The outdoor vegetable harvest was 151 million kilos, of which 56 million kilos were carrots.
  • The strawberry harvest was a record-high: 14 million kilos. In total, nearly 17 million kilos of berries were produced in an area of 5,974 hectares.
  • Greenhouse vegetable production was approximately 76 million kilos, of which 38 million kilos were tomatoes and 34 million kilos were cucumbers.
  • A record quantity of potted vegetables was produced: 87 million pots. Of this, 69 million pots were potted lettuce.
  • Ornamental plant production occupied an area of 133 hectares.
  • The cultivation area of cut flowers fell by a third.
  • The most cultivated bulb flowers were tulips (59 million bulbs) and potted daffodils (3 million pots).
