Second advance estimate of 2023 harvest, 18 September

Published 22.9.2023

The grain crop estimate of approximately 2.9 million tons is 16 percent lower than the average grain crop for ten years. The reason is the lowest estimate of the barley crop in 50 years. Instead, the rye crop estimate exceeds 100,000 tons for the fifth time in 30 years, thus covering the calculated annual consumption in Finland. For the fifth year, the pea crop is growing to record levels — thanks to the increased cultivation area.

Anticipated crops for 2023 in Finland, 18 September:

  • Grain harvest total 2.9 million tons (-19%)
    • Barley 1.02 million tons (-30%)
    • Oats 1.02 million tons (-15%)
    • Wheat 0.77 million tons (-10%)
    • Rye 0.10 million tons (+54%)
  • Turnip rape and rape total 46,000 tons (-19%)
  • Peas 109,000 tons (+18%)
  • Broad bean 13,000 tons (-31%)

The crop production statistics will be expanded and further specified on 24 November, when Luke will publish regional crop production data based on data obtained directly from farms.
