First advance estimate of 2023 harvest, 14 August

Published 18.8.2023

The grain crop estimate of approximately 3 million tons is thirteen percent lower than the average grain crop for ten years. The reason is the second lowest estimate of the barley crop in more than 30 years. Instead, the rye crop estimate exceeds 100,000 tons for the fourth time in 40 years, thus covering the calculated annual consumption in Finland. For the fifth year, the pea crop is growing to record levels — thanks to the increased cultivation area.

Anticipated crops for 2023 in Finland, 14 August:

  • Grain harvest total 3 million tons (-15%)
    • Barley 1.11 million tons (-24%)
    • Oats 1.04 million tons (-14%)
    • Wheat 0.79 million tons (-8%)
    • Rye 0.10 million tons (+58%)
  • Turnip rape and rape total 49,000 tons (-14%)
  • Peas 117,000 tons (+26%)
  • Broad bean 21,000 tons (-22%)

The next statistics, describing the situation on 18 September, will be published on 22 September 2023.
