Commercial marine fishery 2022

Commercial marine fishermen caught a total of 87 million kilos of fish in 2022. It was almost 11 million kilos less than in the year before.

  • The Baltic herring and sprat catches, mainly caught from the open sea by the trawler fleet, contained 94% of the total commercial marine catch.
  • A total of 68 million kilos of Baltic herring and 13 million kilos of sprat were caught. The Baltic herring catch decreased by nine million kilos and the sprat catch by one million kilos from the previous year.
  • One fifth of the Baltic herring catch and a half of the sprat catch were landed outside Finland.
  • The total value of the catch was EUR 28.4 million, the same as in the previous year. The total value of the catch recorded by group 1 fishers was EUR 23.6 million and that by group 2 fishers was EUR 4.8 million.
  • Measured by value, Baltic herring was the most significant species (EUR 15.5 million), followed by sprat (EUR 3.1 million), perch (EUR 2.4 million), European whitefish (EUR 1.7), vendace (EUR 1.4), salmon (EUR 1.3 million and pikeperch (EUR 1.2 million).
  • There were 40 trawlers and nearly 1000 commercial fishermen fishing with trap nets, gill nets and hooks.
  • More vendace were caught than at any time since 1980. Perch catches were also higher compared to the long-term average (1980-2021). Catches of whitefish, pikeperch and salmon were below average.
  • There were 2,136 registered commercial marine fishers in Finland at the end of 2022. Of these, some 387 were group 1 fishers.
