Commercial fellings 2021

In 2021, a total of 65.7 million cubic metres of roundwood was harvested for use by the forest industries, which was 7.5 million cubic metres, or 13%, more than in the previous year. The average felling volumes of the preceding five-year period were exceeded by 4%.

  • The majority (83%) of roundwood removals came from non-industrial private forests, totalling 54.7 million cubic metres of industrial roundwood, up by 16% from the previous year. Total removals in forests owned by forest industry companies and state-owned forests were 11.0 million cubic metres, being at the previous year’s level.
  • Log removals were 29.0 million and pulpwood removals 36.7 million cubic metres. Log removals increased by 17% from the previous year, and pulpwood removals by 10%. Compared with the previous five years’ average, log removals were 9% higher, while pulpwood removals remained same level.
  • Pine was the most harvested tree species for industrial use at 29.2 million cubic metres. Spruce removals were 25.9 and birch removals 10.6 million cubic metres. Compared with the previous year, spruce removals increased the most (17%).
  • Of different assortments, the felling volumes of spruce and birch logs decreased relatively the most, by 19%. Pine log removals increased by 15%. With regard to pulpwood, spruce pulpwood removals increased the most (14%).
  • Roundwood removals were the highest in the regions of North Savonia (6.9 million cubic metres), North Ostrobothnia (6.8 million cubic metres), and North Karelia (6.5 million cubic metres).
  • Energywood removals totalled 6.5 million cubic metres, up by 0.3 million cubic metres, or 5%, from the previous year. A total of 3.8 million cubic metres of delimbed stems and whole-trees was harvested. The total volume of stumps and logging residues was 2.7 million cubic metres.
