Climate benefits from responsible forest fertilization (Catch the carbon -development project)

VaMeLa

Climate benefits from responsible forest fertilization -project promotes climate-sustainable forest management and use thereby supporting the aims of Carbon Neutral Finland 2035 initiative.

The aim of this project is to find out which factors limit the use of fertilization in Finnish private forests. To assess the environmental and climate impacts, we will conduct a life cycle assessment for the use of ash and recycled nutrients. In addition, the usability and availability of mineral fertilizers and nitrogen-containing circular and ash fertilizers will be investigated. The sustainability and environmental effects of fertilizers are essential not only as a true constraint on fertilization, but also important for acceptability of forest fertilization. The project will produce communication and training material for forest owners and forest professionals on the environmental impact of fertilizers and its benefits for forest growth and forest carbon sequestration.
