Competitiveness and sustainability with precision farming: verified knowledge of technology benefits and data utilization

TäsmäHyöty

Science and technology enable more sustainable farming practices. Modern positioning and sensor technologies enable capturing information with centimeter level accuracy. Precision farming refers to allocating inputs within a field based on spatial information.

The utilization of precision farming in Finland is currently relatively low, although the technology has been available for quite long time. Precision farming technologies have a significant potential for increasing the efficiency of resource use, reducing the environmental impact of farming, and improving economics of farmers. However, the exact potential of existing technologies has not been properly evaluated in Finnish conditions.

The aims of this project are:

• To verify the environmental and productivity benefits of precision farming on Finnish farms using large scale field experiments

• Produce information package on the benefits for farmers

• Advance the up take of precision farming technologies trough demonstrations and online dissemination

• Develop data model and software prototype for data exchange between implements and FMIS software

This project will demonstrate the environmental and economic benefits of precision farming. We will deliver scientific knowledge on the resource use, resource use efficiency and yield quality. At the same time, we will co-create and disseminate best practices to farmers. This project will advance the collaboration between scientists, companies, advisors and farmers.
