In Myanmar, a new design for a National Forest Inventory and a modernised satellite based Land Monitoring System is established in line with international requirements and technical recommendations for step-wise improvement of national MRV systems for REDD+ and UNFCCC reporting.
However, the existing database structures and forest statistics system in the Forest Department (FD) and the government have largely stayed the same and is rather outdated. Thus, there is a strong need for restructuring and modernising the existing forest statistics system in the country through widening of the scope and scale of statistics, including the ability of reporting on trends and outlooks for policy and management decision making.
The project goal is therefore to enhance the capacities in the Forest Department to restructure and adapt the national forest statistics system with the ability to
(i) provide more comprehensive, accessible as well as relevant information and data and
(ii) to present them in formats which allow them to be used more readily in decision-making processes of the land use and forest sector at national and sub national levels.
