Weather information as a tool for improved wild berry utilization

MARJASÄÄ

By utilizing the wild berry yield monitoring data of the Natural Resources Institute and the meteorological data of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the effects of weather factors on the yield formation of wild berries (blueberry, lingonberry, cloudberry) are modeled. The yiled models are further processed into map data, by using the Berry Harvest Monitoring data of the Natural Resources Institute and the weather grid data of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The main output of the project is a method that can be used to make harvest forecasts of wild berries during the growing season with an accuracy that is at best equivalent to the Finnish Meteorological Institute's grid data (up to 1 x 1 km) and to visualize yield forecasts as maps.

In the future, map visulaizations will be produced as part of the Natural Resources Centre's wild berry yield monitoring information.
