Mapping of the bedding material situation

Kuivikeselvitys

Peat has long been one of the most common bedding material used in livestock, particularly because of its good properties, availability and competitive price. However, climate and environmental pressures to reduce peat use have already had a negative impact on the availability and price of peat as bedding material. The need to introduce bedding materials to supplement and replace peat is growing rapidly. At the same time, competition for them is also increasing.

The market of bedding materials is currently undergoing major changes. In consequence, there is an acute need for a survey with a broad view of the use and availability of peat and other bedding materials in terms of their prospects and development needs.

Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) has launched a survey to monitor the current situation of bedding materials, both from the users and producers point of view. The survey is commissioned by MTK, and the other associations involved and contributing to the funding are Bioenergy Association, Milk Delegation, Dairy farmers Association, Beef Cattle Association and Finnish Broiler Association. The report will be published by Luke in early autumn 2023.
