Genomic selection tools for climate and environment friendly grass breeding

GENONURMI 01

In this study, the positive climate and environmental impacts of grassland cultivation are increased by reducing the environmental burden of milk and beef production through better digestibility and higher yields. To achieve this goal, we develop breeding methods based on genomic data for timothy.

The developed methods can be utilized in grass breeding. New grass plant varieties can improve the profitability of grass production through improved yield levels, crop security, nutritional value and digestibility of feed material. Grassland can reduce the environmental impact of agriculture, such as nutrient emissions, and promote carbon sequestration in the soil.
