Fusarium species and mycotoxins contaminating onion and their potential risks for food safety

Fusarium mycotoxins in onion

In Finnish onion crops there are plenty of both symptomatic and symptomless Fusarium infections caused by potential mycotoxin producing species like F. oxysporum and F. proliferatum. The aim of this study is to determine whether the symptomless Fusarium strains are able to produce mycotoxins in onions in Finnish climate conditions and whether the mycotoxins create a potential risk for food safety.

In this study we determine whether the symptomless F. oxysporum and F. proliferatum strains are able to produce mycotoxins in onions in Finnish climate conditions and whether the mycotoxins create a potential risk for food safety. The results of this study will be published in peer-reviewed international science journals. The results can be utilized by farmers and authorities.
