Food Waste Ecosystem is a project that creates a new network and process for reducing food waste and for utilising it more efficiently. The project develops methods for measuring and verifying the reduction of food waste and the degree of its utilisation. Regarding inedible food waste, the project explores how companies can build and develop their business around this residue.

The core idea behind the project is realising the principles of waste hierarchy, so that the primary goal is to prevent and reduce food waste. If still edible food is threatened to be wasted, it must primarily used for human consumption.

The primary target group of the project is the food supply chain actors in the Helsinki metropolitan area, particularly food services but also other sources of food waste, such as companies in the food industry. Other target groups include redistributors, organizations and food banks. Additionally, target groups include companies in the circular economy industry that are already making business out of food waste and potential new companies interested in utilising food waste.
