Tractor mounted insect vacuum for Brassica crops

Brass-vac

Climate change has increased the pest pressure in Finland; previously only the seedling stage was affected, but now the damage continues throughout the growing season in oilseed and cruciferous crops. Flea beetles cause leaf damage, seedling damage, at worst re-sowing and, to a lesser extent, reduced growth and yield. On the other hand, restrictions on the use of pesticides increase the risk of resistance. These factors create a rapid need for effective, non-chemical control methods that work in field conditions. The modular insect vacuum developed in this project is designed for several annual plants, which requires extensive adaptability. Adjustable airflow speed, adjustable working height and replaceable suction nozzles allow for quick changes between oilseeds and other cruciferous and vegetable crops, as well as for the removal of pests at different growth stages. The prototype is being developed in collaboration between researchers, engineers and farmers to ensure both technical performance and usability at the farm level. The tests will assess the control efficiency, effects on other organisms, and crop development. The modular design allows the technology to be used on other crops, strengthening the sustainability and resilience of agriculture. The project responds to the CAP and EIP-Agri objectives by promoting co-innovation, reducing dependence on chemical pesticides and improving risk management in a changing climate
