Food systems are facing big and complex changes and challenges. Food systems also constantly change along with society. These changes have different time scales. Some of them happen in longer time periods and they can be predictable, such as demographic changes or lengthening of the growing season due to climate change. While other shocks can be unexpected and may emerge rapidly, such as Covid-19.
Shocks bring out the weaknesses of a system and provide a chance to identify needs for improvement. There is scientific evidence how shocks and crises in the past have led to an improvement of for example governance and management systems and new technology. Recovery of a system and seizing opportunities depends on proper planning and preparation. The present ongoing shocks can be used as an opportunity to Build Back Better.
The overall objective of the BBB-project is to identify systemic leverage points and their interdependencies of the Finnish food system for enhancing resilience and adaptive capacity of the system.
