Expertise
I am Principal Scientist in forest soil science and environmental biogeochemistry at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), Helsinki. I am working on advancing fundamental understanding of soil processes, microbial ecology, and carbon–nitrogen dynamics in boreal ecosystems. My scientific work focuses on: Soil organic carbon and nitrogen cycling: Investigating how soils store and process carbon and nitrogen, with particular attention to mechanisms of soil organic matter formation, decomposition, and stabilization. Microbial ecology and biogeochemistry: Studying how microbial communities (especially fungi and microbial necromass) interact with plant inputs to influence soil nutrient cycles and organic matter stability. Plant–soil–microbe interactions: Exploring how plant roots and their biochemical compounds (e.g., tannins) affect microbial processes and contribute to soil carbon sequestration. Method development: I am developing and applying biochemical and analytical methods, such as advanced liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry techniques, to quantify microbial biomass and necromass in soils and better understand ecosystem processes. I am contributing to broader scientific goals of: Understanding carbon sequestration mechanisms in soils, which is essential for improving climate change models and mitigation strategies. Evaluating how nutrient inputs and environmental factors affect soil microbial processes and long term ecosystem functioning. Advancing analytical tools and interdisciplinary approaches that integrate biochemistry, microbiology, and ecosystem science. Furthermore, I work closely with stakeholders, businesses, foresters, and farmers to advance the development of a sustainable biosociety.
