Wood pellets 2021

  • In 2021, a total of 365,000 tonnes of wood pellets were produced in Finland, showing an increase of 13% from the previous year.
  • More wood pellets were imported than ever before, totalling 196,000 tonnes, being 80% higher than in the previous year. More than half of the imports came from Russia.
  • In 2021, exports of wood pellets totalled 13,000 tonnes, one of the smallest figures in the history of the statistics. The most significant export countries were Norway and Denmark. The highest export volume was recorded in 2008 when 227,000 tonnes of wood pellets were exported, i.e. over twenty times the volume exported in 2021.
  • The calculated domestic consumption of wood pellets (production + imports - exports) increased by 29% to 549,000 tonnes, driven by record-breaking imports.
  • Deliveries by domestic pellet producers to their customers (371,000 tonnes) increased by 24% from the previous year. The volume of pellets delivered to heat and power plants, as well as large buildings, reached 310,000 tonnes. In addition, 61,000 tonnes of pellets were delivered to households and farms. Both categories increased by a quarter.
