  • In 2021, the forest industries’ roundwood consumption totalled 72.2 million cubic metres, being 8% more than in the year before. The consumption of domestic roundwood was at its highest in 2006, when it amounted to 75.5 million cubic metres.
  • The consumption of domestic roundwood increased by 9% from the previous year to 62.4 million cubic metres. All assortments showed an increase. The consumption of imported roundwood totalled 9.8 million cubic metres, up by 1% from the previous year.
  • The most important roundwood assortments used by the forest industries were pine pulpwood (17.9 million cubic metres), hardwood pulpwood (13.6 million cubic metres) and spruce logs (14.4 million cubic metres). The total consumption of logs was 27.3 million cubic metres (+11% from the previous year), and that of pulpwood was 42.2 million cubic metres (+6%).
  • The consumption of roundwood increased in all sectors with the exception of the semi-chemical pulp industry. Nearly half of all roundwood, 34.7 million cubic metres (+7% from the previous year), was processed by the pulp industry. The production of sawmill industry products consumed 27.2 million cubic metres of roundwood (+10%). The relative share of the sawmill industry from the consumption of roundwood increased by 1%.
  • One fifth of roundwood, or 14 million cubic metres, was consumed in the region of South Karelia. It was followed by Kymenlaakso (8.4 million cubic metres) and Central Finland (7.3 million cubic metres).
  • The consumption of forest industry by-products in the production of forest industry products increased by 12% from the previous year, totalling 9.8 million cubic metres. Of this, the pulp industry accounted for more than three quarters.
  • The volume of chips imported into Finland was 4.4 million cubic metres as in the previous year. Based on the difference between the total volume of imported chips and the volume of imported chips consumed by the pulp industry in production, it can be estimated that heating and power plants consumed 1.9 million cubic metres imported chips in energy generation.
