Wood consumption 2025 (provisional)
In 2025, roundwood consumption in Finland totalled 78.9 million cubic metres, representing a 3% increase from the previous year. Forest industry production accounted for 84% of the volume, while the remainder was used for energy production.
- In 2025, total roundwood consumption in Finland amounted to 78.9 million solid cubic metres (+3% from the previous year).
- Of this, 66.1 million cubic metres (+6%) was processed in the forest industry. Domestic sawlogs and pulpwood accounted for 62.6 million cubic metres (+6%), while imported wood totalled 3.5 million cubic metres (−9%).
- Roundwood use for energy production totalled 12.8 million cubic metres (−9%). Of this volume, half was used in heat-only and CHP-plants as forest chips produced from stemwood, and the other half was used as firewood in detached houses and on farms.
- A total of 24.3 million cubic metres (+3%) of forest industry by-product wood and various types of harvesting residues were consumed.
- In forest industry production, 9.3 million cubic metres (+6%) of domestic sawmill chips and sawdust were used.
- In energy production, the total use of solid by-product and residue wood amounted to 15.0 million cubic metres (+1%). Of this, 2.7 million cubic metres of forest chips produced from logging residues and stumps were burned in heat-only and CHP-plants. Forest industry by-product wood (mainly bark, sawdust and industrial wood-residue chips) totalled 10.4 million cubic metres. The total also includes recycled wood and wood pellets burned in heat and power plants (1.4 million m³), as well as recycled and by-product wood and wood pellets burned in detached houses (0.4 million m³)
Roundwood comprises industrial logs and pulpwood, as well as roundwood consumed by heat-only and CHP-plants in energy generation and burned in small-scale housing. In addition, roundwood includes imported chips and sawdust processed by the forest industry, as these quantities have not previously been included in the Finnish roundwood consumption figures.
By-products and residues comprise domestic chips and sawdust consumed in forest industry production and solid forest industry by-products (not liquid by-products) consumed in energy generation, pellets and recycled wood, as well as forest chips made from logging residues and stumps.
More detailed data on Forest industries' wood consumption is presented in the Statistical Release on 28 April 2026 and more detailed data on wood in energy generation in the Statistical Release on 20 March 2026.
