Trade of energywood, 4th quarter and year 2021

Fourth quarter of 2021 

• During the fourth quarter, pruned stemwood made up 51 per cent of all energywood trade recorded in statistics. It was the most valuable energywood species, as the average price paid for it was EUR 5.6 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 27.1 per cubic metre in delivery sales. The price of pruned stemwood increased by 11 per cent from the previous quarter in standing sales and one per cent in delivery sales.
• Logging residues made up 39 per cent of all purchased energywood. The average price paid for it was EUR 4.3 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 17.8 per cubic metre in delivery sales.  The price increased by seven per cent in standing sales and by six per cent in delivery sales.

Year 2021 

• The average price paid for energywood was EUR 4.8 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 24.9 per cubic metre in delivery sales in 2021. Compared with the previous year, the price increased by seven per cent in standing sales and decreased four per cent in delivery sales in real terms (deflation: wholesale price index).
• The average price paid for pruned stemwood was EUR 5.1 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 27.3 per cubic metre in delivery sales. The price went up by two per cent in standing sales and it went down by six per cent in delivery sales.
• The average price paid for logging residues was EUR 4.8 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 17.4 per cubic metre in delivery sales. This was an increase of 13 per cent in standing sales and a fall of 10 per cent in delivery sales to the year before.
• Standing sales covered four fifths and delivery sales one fifth of all trade recorded in statistics during year 2021. Pruned stemwood made up 49 per cent and logging residues accounted for 43 per cent of all energywood. Whole trees only covered only five per cent and stumps three per cent.
• Energywood trade recorded in statistics increased by slightly more than a fifth from the previous year, with the volume of logging residues increasing by 38 per cent and that of pruned stems by 27 per cent. The volume was also a fifth higher than the previous year’s total volume.

Data of logging residues and total energywood in standing sales (2020/1–2020/3) has been revised February 11, 2021.

The recorded prices are based on prices entered in wood trade agreements. Any other increments and services related to wood trade are not included in the statistics. The prices do not include government subsidies.

The information is not rounded up to correspond to the total non-industrial private wood trade in Finland. This means that the published wood volumes represent about half of the energywood purchased from non-industrial private forests.
