Structure of agricultural and horticultural enterprises 2020

  • There were a total of 45,630 agricultural and horticultural enterprises in Finland in 2020. The number of farms decreased by roughly 1 197 from 2019. 
  • The average utilisable agricultural area was 50 hectares per farm. 
  • The average area of leased arable land was 15 hectares per farm.
  • In 2020, the average age of farmers was 53 years.
  • Some 86% of all farms were family-run, 9% were farming syndicates, while farms owned by heirs and limited liability farms represented about 3%.
  • Roughly 8% of farmers on privately owned farms were under 35 years old, while 32% of these farmers were over 60 years old.
  • 70% of farms had crop production as their production line, while 25% of farms were classified as livestock farms. The other Finnish farms are mixed farms with no single clear primary production line.
