• Between 2008 and 2010, approximately 1,200 small sawmills were in operation in Finland, each handling a maximum of 10,000 cubic metres of roundwood on an annual basis.
• They handled 0.7 million cubic metres of wood on average on an annual basis.
• Six sawmills out of seven operated on a part-time basis, with part-time entrepreneurs accounting for two-thirds of the wood handled by small sawmills.
• The number of sawmills and the volume of sawn timber has significantly decreased over the past ten years. Compared to 1998, three-fifths of the sawmills in operation then are still in business, but the volume of timber sawn by the remaining mills has plunged to one third of the volume in 1998.
