Agricultural Census 2020: Other entrepreneurship in agriculture and horticulture, 2020

Approximately 14,500 farms were engaged in other business activities in addition to agriculture and horticulture in 2020. The most common form of other business activities was agricultural contracting for external parties, with 6,600 farms being engaged in contracting. In agriculture and horticulture, other business activities mean activities in which a farm’s machinery, buildings, areas or products are used. The management of a farm’s forests is not included in other business activities.

  • Nearly 14,500 farms were engaged in other business activities in addition to agriculture and horticulture in 2020.

  • The number of farms engaged in other business activities has increased by roughly 300 farms since 2016.

  • Farms engaged in other business activities accounted for 32 per cent of all farms.

  • The share of farms engaged in other business activities has risen by 3 % since 2016.

  • Agricultural contractual work was the most common form of other business activities, with roughly 6,600 farms engaged in agriculture machine contracting.

  • The turnover of other business activities usually accounted for less than 10 per cent of a farm’s total turnover.

  • Most commonly, farms whose main production line was other cattle farming, i.e. sheep, goat or horse farming, were engaged in other business activities.

  • Other business activities in addition to agriculture and horticulture were the most common in the ELY Centre regions of Uusimaa and Lapland.
