Milk Production by Area 2025

In 2025, the number of dairy farms decreased by seven percent, while milk production remained almost at the same level as the previous year. Kuopio maintained its position as the largest milk‑producing municipality in the country.

  • Dairies received 2,094 million litres of milk last year, which was slightly less than in 2024.
  • Milk production increased in six regions. The strongest growth occurred in North Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia, South Ostrobothnia and North Savo.
  • In most regions, however, production declined. The largest decreases in volume were recorded in Päijät‑Häme, Uusimaa, Lapland and Central Finland.
  • Kuopio continued to hold the top position among milk‑producing municipalities. A total of 68 million litres of milk was produced there last year. The next largest producers were Kurikka with 63 million litres and Kiuruvesi with 54 million litres.
  • The number of dairy farms totalled 3,834 last year, seven percent fewer than in 2024. The sharpest declines occurred in South Savo (-12%) and North Karelia (-10%). The highest numbers of dairy farms were found in North Ostrobothnia (647 farms) and North Savo (530 farms).
