Sales and use of antimicrobials for livestock
On this page
The aim is that the use of antimicrobials for livestock remains at the current low and controlled level.
The indicator represents the sale of antimicrobials in Finland. The moderate sales figures for antibiotics in Finland are based on the long-term work done to advance the health and welfare of livestock, as carried out in Finland for several decades in cooperation between the authorities and the business sector. In Finland, the aim is to prevent infectious and inflammatory diseases by ensuring good production and living conditions. In addition, livestock are mainly medicated as individuals in Finland. This differs from many other European countries, in which most antimicrobials are administered to groups of livestock through feed or drinking water. The use of antimicrobials for livestock is very moderate in Finland on an international scale. In 2023, total sales of antimicrobials was 16.1 mg/PCU.

Description of the indicator
The indicator is measured by a unit (PCU) developed by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which indicates the total number of individuals in Finland’s livestock populations by species with the average standardised weight of each species at the age at which an individual is most likely to receive antimicrobials. This figure is compared with total sales of antimicrobials.
The indicator is a common CAP plan impact indicator I.28 as set out in regulation (EU) 2021/2115 , Annex I. It is used in all Member States.
The indicator will next be updated in spring 2026.
