Number of young and new farmers

To ensure the security of supply and the production of food, it is particularly important to improve the position of food production and agriculture in job markets. In Finland, as well as in the other Member States, most farmers are currently aged over 50 years. The young and new farmers defined in the indicator are aged under 40 years and are taking up agricultural activities for the first time.

Finland’s CAP plan for 2023–2027 focuses on attracting young and new farmers to ensure the security of supply and the production of food through several measures, including support for start-up, increased investment support, and income support for young farmers. The goal is, by 2027, to support 2,700 new agricultural entrepreneurs in starting or diversifying business activities.

The indicator is a common CAP plan impact indicator I.23 as set out in regulation (EU) 2021/2115 (eur-lex.europa.eu), Annex I. It is used in all Member States.

The first data on the indicator will be published in 2025.
