Number of high-speed optical fibre connections

The goal is that, by 2027, a total of 5,500 km of new high-speed optical fibre networks of 1 Gbit/s has been built in the operating area, using which digital data can be transferred at very high speeds, practically with unlimited capacity. Promoting digitalisation has for long been a key theme in national and EU policy. The goal is that all people in rural and urban areas should have equal access to reliable high-speed data connections and an equal opportunity to use them.

In addition to the national support programme, broadband construction has been supported by project funding under the partly EU-funded Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland, and from 2023 as part of the CAP plan.

The significance of digitalisation has increased in society and people’s everyday lives. Reliable data connections comprise a basic infrastructure comparable to the road, power and water supply network, without which it is difficult to get by. Effective data connections, which an optical fibre network can offer, are also important considering the attractiveness of rural areas. They have an impact on companies seeking their base of operations and people considering a move. Reliable high-speed broadband connections are also closely linked to people’s need for safety and their sense of security. In other words, the availability of connections is also a question of equality and non-discrimination, both in terms of regions and different users. Similarly, the perspectives of security and sustainability must be addressed.

Situation in October 2025: 18 fibre optic projects have received a positive payment decision. The projects have been paid €350,020.78 from the EU Rural Development Fund and €463,981.14 in national funding.

Description of the indicator

The indicator monitors the development of the number of supported optical fibre networks in rural areas.

The next update of indicator data will be in 2026.
