Employment in the bioeconomy in agricultural areas
On this page
In Finland, “bioeconomy” means an economy which uses renewable biological natural resources in a resource-smart way to provide food, energy, products and services. Key renewable biological natural resources in Finland include the biomasses offered by forests, agricultural land, soil, waterbodies and the sea, i.e. organic matter and fresh water. They are used as raw materials and processed products. Ecosystem services are part of the bioeconomy. The bioeconomy may also include the development and production of technologies, applications and services based on the sustainable use of natural resources.
The multiplier effects of the bioeconomy extend to several industrial sectors that fall outside conventional bioeconomy accounts. Therefore, the future challenge is to make these links visible through bioeconomy statistics and indicators.

Description of the indicator
Information about the number of people employed in the bioeconomy by region in recent years has been linked to this page. In addition, the “Bioeconomy in figures” page presents most recent statistics on the development of the Finnish bioeconomy. The calculations have been made in cooperation between Luke and Statistics Finland. The national accounts produced by Statistics Finland are used as the primary data source. The development of the bioeconomy by sector is monitored using the following indicators: output, value added, investments, the number of people employed, and exports.
The indicator will next be updated early in the year 2026.
