Official Statistics of Finland (OSF): Yes
European Statistical System (ESS): Yes
Description
In forest accounts, use and mass balances are used to describe the supply of wood and forest industry products from different sources, their utilization in the forest industry and energy generation, and the flows of wood material in the national economy. In addition, the statistics present information on foreign trade in forest industry products in terms of dry-matter tons of wood.
Information content
Forest accounts consist of two parts: use balance and mass balance. The use balance presents information, in one compact table, on the supply of wood and forest industry products, foreign trade, use and production of wood by branch of the forest industry and by product category. In the mass balance, all forest industry raw materials and products are converted into a uniform unit of measurement: dry-matter tons of wood. In the mass balance, the tying up of all wood material in roundwood, intermediate products, end products, fuels and waste is monitored.
Classifications used
According to the Standard Industrial Classification (TOL 2008), forest industries are divided into the wood-products industries (TOL 2008: 16), and the pulp and paper industries (TOL 2008: 17). The EU Combined Nomenclature (CN) is applied to foreign trade.
Data collection methods and data sources
There is no separate data collection in the compilation of forest accounts. Instead, they are prepared using Luke’s forest statistics of, for example, roundwood removals, the industrial and energy consumption of wood, as well as forest industry production and foreign trade in forestry products. Some statistics are calculated using conversion factors, which are based on information provided by experts from Luke, Aalto University, Statistics Finland and the UNECE.
Update frequency
The statistics are compiled annually.
Preparation and publication schedule
The statistics are published during November following the year that they refer to.
Time series
Forest accounts, produced in accordance with uniform statistical principles, are available from Luke’s statistics database starting from 2000. The time series provided by Statistics Finland extend to 1980.
