Estimated area sown to winter crops 2023

Winter sowings 2023 in Finland compared to previous years cultivated area:

• The estimated area sown with winter rye was 19,800 hectares (-26%).
• The estimated area sown with winter wheat was 58,800 hectares (-14%). 
• The area sown with winter triticale was 9,000 hectares.
• The area sown with winter barley was 2,000 hectares.
• The area sown with winter rape and-turnip rape was 5,200 hectares (+107%).
• The area sown with organic winter rye was 3,800 hectares and organic winter wheat 2,800 hectares.
• Direct seeding was used for 14% of winter wheat, representing 7,900 hectares of the total area sown with winter wheat.
• Direct seeding was used for 6% of winter rye, representing 1,100 hectares of the total area sown with winter rye.

The estimated area sown to winter crops was asked from farms during Luke's crop production survey, covering 6,000 farms. The sown area will be specified next June when sown areas entered by farms in the rural business register of the Finnish Food Authority.
