Published 30.1.2020

  • According to a preliminary estimate, fishing vessels registered in Finland caught a total of 136 million kilos of fish in 2019.

  • A total of 113 million kilos of Baltic herring and 16 million kilos of sprat were caught. The herring catch decreased by 13 million kilos from the previous year, while the sprat catch remained about the same.

  • In coastal areas, most fishermen deployed trap nets and gillnets and targeted mainly for   perch, whitefish, pikeperch, salmon and pike.

  • European perch, salmon, vendace, European whitefish and smelt catches increased from the previous year but, apart from smelt and vendace catches, were lower than on average in the 2000s.

  • The number of active fishermen continued to decrease.
