Commercial inland fishery 2022

Commercial fishermen caught 5.1 million kilos of fish from inland waters in 2022. The volume of catch was the same as the previous year. The catch of vendace increased to 2.4 million kilos.

  • Three fifths of the commercial catch from inland waters was vendace or pikeperch. Vendace accounted for about 46% of the total catch and pikeperch for 15%.
  • The catch of pikeperch decreased to 758 000 kg. This is 168 000 kg less than the previous year. The catch had increased for four consecutive years before 2022.
  • The catch of crayfish was around 631 000 pieces. It consisted almost entirely of signal crayfish.  The catch decreased by about 100 000 pieces from the previous year.
  • The value of the catch was EUR 15.9 million, with group 1 fishers catching EUR 12.7 million and group 2 fishers EUR 3.2 million.
  • Measured by value, vendace returned as the most significant inland species. The value of catch increased by EUR 1.2 million to EUR 5.8 million. The value of the catch including the roe of vendace was EUR 6.1 million.
  • The value of catch of pikeperch decreased to EUR 5.3 million.
  • Together, vendace and pikeperch accounted for 80% of the value of the catches in the commercial inland fisheries.
  • European whitefish was the third most valuable inland species (EUR 0.91 million). The value of the catch of signal crayfish was EUR 0.78 million.
  • Catches of removal fishing accounted for 15% of the total catch. Bream and roach each accounted for about one third of the catch, and other species for just under one third. Other species were mainly ruffe, blue bream, and small perch. 
  • There were 1,637 registered commercial fishers in Finnish inland waters at the end of 2022. Of them 336 were group 1 fishers.
