Access to game and large carnivore laboratory
On this page
The game and large carnivore laboratory provides expert services to support game animal research and population monitoring. Each year, the laboratory processes hundreds of carcasses and conducts a wide range of studies and analyses. Necropsies collect information on species’ sex structure, reproductive status, age, condition, and measurements such as weight and length. Tasks requiring special expertise include species identification of prey animals based on hair found in stomach and intestinal contents.
Sampling is a key part of the work. Tissue and organ samples are collected from animals for monitoring zoonotic diseases and parasites in cooperation with the Finnish Food Authority. DNA samples are also taken for genetic analyses, and the laboratory maintains a comprehensive DNA bank. The game laboratory combines biological expertise, precise methods, and extensive sample management to ensure reliable information on the status and health of game animal populations.
