Certified production, maintenance of pre-basic mother plants

The aim of the project is to maintain and produce healthy and true-to-type mother plant material for vegetative propagation horticultural plants for the use of a certified plant production. The maintenance includes fruit, berry and ornamental plants that are commercially significant, bred in Finland or genetic valuable Finnish clones. The project includes also some foreign varieties used in Finland. Production is regulated by statutes concerning the plant production (regulations adopted by Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry based on EU legislation) and phytosanitary legislation. Finnish Food Authority is the supervising the production chain. The aim of certified plant production is to reduce plant pest problems associated with plant import and to ensure Finland's self-sufficiency of healthy and true-to-type plant material. Pre-basic mother plant management for certified plant production produces varieties processed by Finnish plant breeders as well as the best plant clones selected in various projects.
