Reducing nitrogen losses in vegetable production

Typpitalvi

In this project, we study primary pulp mill sludge and catch crops as methods of retaining nitrogen of green manure and cabbage crop residue for the succeeding crop. These methods reduce nitrogen losses and the need for mineral fertilizers. Their additional benefits are reduction of climate impact, improved soil health and increased diversity of the farming environment.

A field experiment is conducted in Piikkiö, Finland, as part of the doctoral dissertation of Aava Asikainen. The topic of her dissertation is nitrogen benefits of green manure and reducing nitrogen losses in vegetable production. The dissertation will also cover the field experiment of the project Multi-beneficial production method on vegetable farms (HYÖTY).
