Downstream Migration of Sea Trout Smolts and Cormorant Predation in the Kokemäenjoki River: An Assessment Based on PIT Tagging and Acoustic Telemetry

TRACER

Natural Resources Institute Finland studies whether stocked sea trout smolts in the Kokemäenjoki River are consumed by cormorants. Conducted in 2026–2028, the study combines PIT tagging and acoustic telemetry to examine smolt survival, migration routes, and the locations and periods of greatest predation risk. The results will support more effective stocking practices, improved management of migratory fish populations, and evidence-based decisions concerning cormorant management. The study is funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund.
