SuoLiike project develops revenue and business opportunities for former peat production areas. We are mapping and testing potential cultivated and natural plants and crops that are suitable for peatland and wetland farming, and are commercially interesting. We are investigating key cultivation techniques and the possibilities for using raw materials as food, peat substitutes, and sources of bioactive compounds. Through greenhouse gas measurements and sample taking, we assess the significance of plant options for carbon sequestration and, in turn, their role in national carbon neutrality targets.
The implementation time is 1.3.2024 - 30.6.2026 and the project is funded by Kymenlaakson liitto and The Just Transition Fund (JTF).
In a field experiment established in Kymenlaakso in the summer of 2024, the success of nearly fifteen different plant species is studied on a former peat extraction site. Photo: Marjo Keskitalo, Luke (3.9.2025).
