Management measures for migratory fish populations in regulated rivers - Umbrella IV

SAT IV-A

Umbrella IV researches and develops management solutions for migratory fish populations in regulated rivers.

Natural Resources Institute Finland will implement six projects under the Umbrella from 2025 to 2028, with research topics including:

1. The current status of lamprey populations and updating their management measures

2. The size of the salmon population ascending the Iijoki River and behaviour in the hydraulic fishway

3. PIT monitoring as a routine method for evaluating the success of migratory fish stocking

4. The effectiveness of whitefish stockings and current profile characterisation of productive whitefish spawning areas

5. Methods for restoring the landlocked salmon and brown trout populations in the Lieksanjoki and Pielisjoki rivers

6. Managing the risk of water mold disease in natural waters using eDNA methods

Like the three previous Umbrella projects, Umbrella IV operates with a broad-based funding and cooperation model.

The project is funded by Kemijoki Oy, Fortum Power and Heat Oy, PVO-Vesivoima Oy, UPM Energy Oy, Vattenfall Oy, Oulun Energia Oy, Helen Oy, Adato Energia Oy, Länsi-Suomen Voima Oy, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

The project's budget is €1,670,000, with 71% of the funding coming from private financiers.
