Project Objective

The overall objective of the project is to improve biodiversity conservation and strengthen the management of invasive alien species and diseases across Northern Fennoscandia by developing LAMP-based (Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification) tools for species identification.

LAMP is a rapid and cost-effective DNA-based method for detecting species from tissue, soil, or water (eDNA) samples. The method consists of three steps:

1) DNA extraction from tissue, soil or water sample

2) Amplification of target DNA at a constant temperature (60–65°C)

3) Detection of the result, indicating whether the target species is present or absent

The entire process takes only 15–30 minutes, and the presence of a target species can be identified with the naked eye through a colour reaction. Once optimized, the method can be applied without specialised expertise or expensive laboratory equipment.

Key Activities

The project will begin by identifying priority target species together with relevant stakeholders. Based on these needs, validated LAMP primers will be developed for the selected species, along with user-friendly guidelines and laboratory protocols to support practical application.

To facilitate uptake of the method, the project will also organise training workshops and knowledge-sharing activities for stakeholders. These activities will strengthen technical skills and support the practical use of LAMP-based detection tools in different sectors.

Expected Impact

The project will enhance collaboration between researchers and public authorities across Northern Fennoscandia while increasing awareness of the opportunities offered by LAMP technology. By enabling rapid and accessible species detection, the method can support early detection and management of invasive alien species and diseases.

The project’s target groups include public authorities, private sector organisations, and civil society stakeholders.
