Phenotyping

Phenotyping

The aim of this project is to find cost-effective, accurate and precise techniques for phenotyping and measuring wood quality traits for tree breeding purposes, and to speed up the transfer of the genetic gains into forest regeneration material. Tools of advanced genomic selection are soon available also in forest improvement and the efforts to increase the throughput of phenotypic selection become increasingly important.

In this project the experts of forest tree breeding, wood science, and forest pathology collaborate to estimate the genetic variation in important wood quality traits, to find the most efficient phenotyping systems, and to figure out the role of forest tree breeding in producing wood of high quality.
