Package-Heroes - New packaging solutions for people, planet and business
PackageHeroes
Some 26 million tons of plastic waste are generated in the European Union yearly. Nearly 60% of it consists of packages of various kinds. Food packages form a large share of our waste streams but they are also important in protecting our food and preventing food waste.
In Package-Heroes project we study and develop solutions that reduce food package waste in the future and are good for people, planet and business. We need more knowledge about the environmental impacts of different packaging solutions, about ways to commercialize new packaging innovations, about consumer preferences and about different barriers to change. Together with stakeholders, we envision possibilities of future food packaging and ways to achieve them.
The project is carried out in 2019-2023 and it is funded by the Strategic Research Council under the Academy of Finland. We co-operate in various ways with a wide range of stakeholders.
Together with stakeholders, we produce and distribute knowledge about better food packaging solutions. The research results can be used, for example, in the implementation of the Plastic road map, in food and packaging industries and in non-governmental organisations of the civil society.

A good package keeps food safe and prevents food waste. At the same time, however, the food that we eat produces every day a huge amount of waste.
In Package-Heroes, we study and develop packaging solutions, which address simultaneously food protection and the global and constantly increasing concern of plastic packaging waste. More scientific knowledge is needed about the environmental effects of different materials and solutions, about the ways to commercialise new packaging innovations as well as about consumer preferences.
Package-Heroes is a research project funded by the Strategic Research Council functioning under the Academy of Finland. Our five-year-project kicked off in the beginning of 2019 and finishes by the end of 2023.
