MICROBES-4-CLIMATE (M4C) is a European research project dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the critical relationships between microorganisms, plants, and soils in the context of climate change. Microbial communities play a central role in ecosystem functioning, influencing nutrient cycling, soil fertility, plant health, carbon sequestration, and the ability of ecosystems to adapt to environmental stress. Understanding these interactions is essential for developing effective solutions to the growing challenges posed by climate change.
The project supports curiosity-driven research by providing scientists with access to cutting-edge Research Infrastructures, specialized facilities, data resources, and expert support. M4C brings together services from multiple European Research Infrastructures to create a coordinated and user-friendly ecosystem for climate-related research on terrestrial biodiversity, agriculture, and forestry.
A key objective of M4C is to improve access to data and data services while enhancing the integration and interoperability of research facilities and platforms. The project also delivers comprehensive training and scientific assistance to researchers and infrastructure staff, ensuring that users can fully benefit from available resources and technologies.
Through physical, remote, and virtual access services, M4C enables researchers to investigate how climate change affects microbial communities and how these changes influence plant productivity, ecosystem resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable land management. Ultimately, the project aims to generate new knowledge and innovative solutions that support climate-resilient agriculture and forestry while strengthening Europe's research capacity to address environmental challenges and safeguard ecosystem health.
