The goal is to understand how tree growth rate connect with belowground rooting processes by utilizing Norway spruce genotypes known to be fast- and slow-growing in long-term trials. We will build a model for fine root architecture and compare root proliferation of these spruce origins in their early stages of development. Moreover, we will assess the role of disturbances and soil spatial heterogeneity in root architecture, ectomycorrhizal fungal colonization and nutrient acquisition.
