Carbon Management for Building Resilience: Local Capacity Development for Sustainable Forest Resource Management, Climate Change Adaptation in Sparsely Populated Communities
The FORESTCARBOVISION project addresses the environmental challenges of the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) area by developing technologies that enhance forest carbon sinks and support carbon trading. The target groups include forest owners, environmental actors, and policymakers, who are provided with practical tools and solutions. The project is implemented across three countries, and international cooperation helps tailor the solutions to different ecosystems. A broad network of experts from various fields is involved.
Objectives and activities
The main goal of the project is to enhance regional sustainability by developing and showcasing forest carbon farming practices. The project will conduct a baseline assessment, define criteria for best practices, and develop carbon sequestration solutions suited to the specific needs of the NPA region. These solutions will be tested and validated in pilot areas, where the functionality of the technologies will be evaluated in practice.
Results
The FORESTCARBOVISION project will deliver tools for assessing carbon stocks, clear recommendations for best practices, and pilot demonstrations that showcase the scalability and effectiveness of the solutions. The outcomes will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve sustainability, particularly in remote communities. The results will directly benefit forest owners, public authorities, and environmental stakeholders.
Funding and collaboration
The project is led by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). Other partners include Oulu University of Applied Sciences, the Agricultural University of Iceland, and the Green Skibbereen cluster. The project is co-funded by the EU and the Regional Council of Lapland under the Interreg NPA programme.
