Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is looking for a research professor for a five-year tenure in plant genomics.
One of the greatest challenges facing humanity today is to find solutions to secure food supplies, while at the same time considering how to produce healthy and nutritious food with high ethical and ecological value. To achieve these goals, we need novel and innovative genetic approaches to enhance breeding programmes for agricultural and horticultural crops. The Research Professor in Plant Genomics and Breeding we are seeking will play a key role in addressing these issues.
Luke is looking for a leading specialist in the field of plant genomics and plan biotechnology
The person selected for the position of research professor must be a leading specialist in the field of plant genomics and plant biotechnology. The candidate should have a doctoral degree in molecular biology, genetics, genomics or similar field, and a profound understanding of crop breeding and production, as well as the food production system. Experience in crop production in the boreal region is considered as an advantage. The successful applicant must have competence in molecular genetics, genomics and molecular breeding technologies. Expertise in bioinformatics and the ability to apply statistical methods to genomic data are considered as an advantage.
Research professor’s responsibility area is in genomics and breeding at Luke. The key competence areas include molecular genetics, genomics, and molecular breeding technologies. In addition, we expect the applicant to have a profound understanding of crop breeding and production, as well as the food production system. Responsibilities include, among other things, tasks related to the information Luke provides on biodiversity in crops and properties important for breeding and developing breeding methods for crops in the boreal ecosystem.
Planning and conducting ambitious, innovative and multidisciplinary research projects
Research Professors play an important part in leading and developing research at Luke. The tasks include planning and conducting ambitious, innovative, and multidisciplinary research projects. The role also involves actively developing one's own research area and mentoring early career researchers, as well as participating in national and international research and stakeholder networks. The position will also require active publication in high-impact scientific journals and dissemination of research results to policy makers, industry, primary producers and society.
A strong proven track record of relevant scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and proven record of successful acquisition of external research funding is required. The person must have good cooperation skills and strong international networks. It also requires the ability to independently create and manage large, scientifically high quality and socially impactful international projects and project consortia.
