Luke's new Research Professor Eeva Vainio: "We need new approaches to manage forest pathogens when the climate and forest management practices are changing, "
Dr Eeva Vainio started as Research Professor of Forest Health at the Natural Resources Institute of Finland on 1 November 2024. Since its establishment, Vainio has worked at Luke as a Senior Scientist, Principal Scientist and Research Manager. She completed her PhD on biological control of Heterobasidion root rot at the Finnish Forest Research Institute.
Congratulations on your nomination! What do you expect from your new position?
I expect to work with my colleagues to promote high-quality scientific research that will serve as a basis for the development of practical solutions aiming at safeguarding the health of forest trees.
What is the focus of your work as a forest health research professor?
One of my main research areas has been Heterobasidion root rot and its biological control, which is a research area that needs continued attention. My new position is a great opportunity to broaden my research horizon. I find it inspiring to occasionally venture into basic research and dive into new and exciting research topics through international collaboration.
What are the key forest health issues that future research should address?
Chronic diseases affecting our economically most important forest trees will continue to require monitoring and development of new control approaches. New tools are also needed for the detection and control of emerging pathogens and invasive and alien species, which are becoming more prevalent with climate change. In addition, we need to increase preparedness towards tree diseases that may become a problem when using alternative tree species, as well as assess the impact of new forest management practices on the health of forest trees. Regarding forest nurseries, the key challenges include the development of alternative bio-based solutions to substitute chemical pesticides for diseases control and development of disease-resistant planting stock.
What perspectives would you like to see in the public debate on forests?
As is typical of our times, the public debate on forests is often unnecessarily heated. I would like to see moderation and science-based arguments. One solution rarely fits all.
What is your own relationship with forests?
Like for most Finns, forests have served many purposes throughout my life, as a playground, a place to pick berries and mushrooms, a place for hiking and contemplation, and as a workplace. Forest is a haven for lifelong learning, a perfect combination of work and fun.
Research Professors are in key positions for the scientific expertise and international visibility and effectiveness of Luke. The aim is to ensure top-level research in Luke’s strategic fields, as well as applicability of research in business.
