Deatnu watershed future visions workshop in October

The International Indigenous Research Symposium takes place in Utsjoki on the 3rd and 4th of October this year. It is organized by the Sharing Our Knowledge project in collaboration with the International Indigenous Salmon Peoples Network and occurs on the heels of the 2nd Indigenous Salmon Peoples Gathering in Karasjoki. As part of the programme, a local workshop “Deatnu watershed future visions” will be organised for local and Sami fishing organizations and other interested parties by the MARGISTAR and RecoSal projects, both initiatives led by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) on October 3, at 15:30–18:30 at Hotel Utsjoki. The workshop plenary will be held in English and working group discussions will be conducted in Finnish, Norwegian and Sámi language. All working groups will come together in plenaries to share visions and suggested pathways. Plenary sessions will be in English, and translation into Sámi will be provided.  

The workshop is organized by the MARGISTAR and RecoSal projects and is designed to elicit ways forward towards a healthy future for the Teno / Tana / Deatnu river. The watershed is in precarious state and one of the challenges is the lack of salmon as a basis for the local and Sami culture, and economic livelihoods. What kind of futures are admired and what are the next vital steps towards these futures? What are the tools and solutions that could be shared across borders to address the prolonged situation of severely depleted Atlantic salmon populations? How can collaboration across local and traditional knowledge holders and science be organized? The target groups for the workshop are organizations, policy makers and local populations on both sides of the Teno / Tana / Deatnu river.

Det er organisert av Sharing Our Knowledge-prosjektet i samarbeid med International Indigenous Salmon Peoples Network og skjer i hælene på 2nd Indigenous Salmon Peoples Gathering i Karasjok. Som en del av programmet vil vi organisere en lokal workshop "Deatnu watershed future visions" for lokale og samiske fiskeorganisasjoner og andre interesserte parter organisert av MARGISTAR og RecoSal-prosjektene, begge initiativer ledet av Naturressursinstituttet i Finland (Luke). Workshopens plenum vil bli holdt på engelsk og arbeidsgruppediskusjoner vil bli gjennomført på finsk, norsk og samisk. Alle arbeidsgrupper vil komme sammen i plenum for å dele visjoner og foreslåtte løsninger. Plenumssesjoner vil foregå på engelsk, og oversettelse til samisk vil bli gitt.

Workshopen er organisert av MARGISTAR og RecoSal-prosjektene og er designet for å fremkalle veier fremover mot en sunn fremtid for Deatnu-elven. Vassdraget er i en prekær tilstand og en av utfordringene er mangelen på laks som grunnlag for lokal og samisk kultur, og økonomisk levebrød. Hva slags fremtid er ønsket og hva er de neste viktige skrittene mot disse fremtidene? Hva er verktøyene og løsningene som kan deles på tvers av landegrenser for å håndtere den langvarige situasjonen med sterkt utarmede atlantiske laksebestander? Hvordan kan samarbeid på tvers av lokale og tradisjonelle kunnskapsbærere og vitenskap organiseres? Målgruppene for workshopen er organisasjoner, beslutningstakere og lokalbefolkning på begge sider av Deatnu-elven.
