Jaana Sorvali

My research focuses on the sustainability of livelihoods in Arctic regions, climate change adaptation and societal resilience. My particular interests include the acceptability and fairness of natural resource use, climate and environmental security, and the reconciliation of livelihoods and land-use needs in a changing geopolitical environment. My work combines environmental psychology with multidisciplinary perspectives and draws on scientific, local and Indigenous knowledge. I have studied, among other topics, adaptation in agriculture, forestry, reindeer husbandry and food systems, the sustainable use of peatlands, and the participation of young people and Indigenous Peoples in Arctic climate action. My work is closely connected to policy development at both national and EU levels. I contribute to the development of Finland’s national climate change adaptation policy and produce evidence on climate risks, vulnerabilities, policy instruments and the effectiveness of adaptation measures to support decision-making. In this work, I draw on my experience at the European Commission, where I contributed to the preparation of European climate change adaptation policy and legislation as well as the EU’s Arctic policy. I also serve as a Lead Author for the second Working Group contribution, on impacts, adaptation and vulnerability, to the Seventh Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). My aim is to work with researchers, policymakers, industries, local communities and Indigenous Peoples to develop practical and locally acceptable solutions that strengthen community well-being and security, support the renewal of natural resource-based livelihoods, and promote evidence-informed decision-making at local, national, EU and international levels.
